Portland Oregon
About the City of Portland

The city of Portland is located at the mouth of the Columbia Gorge in Oregon. The Willamette river flows through Portland. Maybe you've heard Portland, Oregon has been proclaimed as North America's "Best Big City," by Money magazine. One visit explains why. Portland is known for its green spaces, clean atmosphere, and rich and diverse culture. Nearly 250,000 people live in Portland and the city encompasses 134 square miles.

Known as the "City of Roses" Portland, Oregon is a popular tourist destination. The Rose Festival's Grand Floral Parade is the second largest all-floral parade in North America and the single-largest spectator event in Oregon. More than 500,000 spectators line the 4.3 mile parade route which begins inside the Memorial Coliseum and continues through Downtown Portland. This parade is the crowning event in the Portland Festival of Roses celebrated each year in June.

Portland has a rich performing arts culture especially downtown; and the Saturday Market showcases the arts and crafts of Portland's rich artisan community. The Saturday Market runs through the summer and reopens for the "Festival of the last minute" before the Christmas holiday. Portland has multiple parks and recreational opportunities. A bike trail runs from Oregon City through Portland and up the Columbia River Gorge. Hiking trails abound in both the gorge and also the west hills area. The Zoo, OMSI, Bird Sanctuary, Forestry Center, Rose Garden, Japanese Garden, and Children's Museum all offer traditional touring destinations.

The Portland School District has 45,472 students in 90 schools from grades K-12. Several community college campuses in the Portland Community college system, as well as several highly regarded private schools are also located in Portland. Portland State University downtown and University of Portland in the north Portland neighborhood of University Park are the major universities in Portland. Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland is world famous for its medical research facilities. Multnomah Bible College is one of the nations leading theological seminaries and the National College of Naturopathic medicine as well as the Western states Chiropractic college are also nationally renowned.
